Welcome back to school!
We started off the academic year with a bang, welcoming in the month of Malaysia's independence with a patriotic spirit. Our teacher, Mr. Joon Kee, came dressed for the occasion, demonstrating his flag-waving prowess to the theme of Sudirman's '31 Ogos'. Needless to say, we were thrilled!
After wishing us a warm welcome, Mr. Joon Kee proceeded to remind us why we come to school and what we do. 'We are here because we believe there is a genius in every child. To unlock that genius, we go beyond IQ to multiple intelligences in developing the full potential of every child.' He then helped us with identifying our various intelligences through a quick reflection exercise. It was fun to find out that we were smart in so many ways!
Mr. Joon Kee also reminded us that as important as intelligence is, it is character which really makes us great people. To do so, he used several students as examples of Pelita's 6 characters (Compassion, Responsibility, Perseverance, Discipline, Integrity and Respect). Haziq was particularly impressive as he told us how he overcame his fear of public speaking by trying again and again. He's now one of the best speakers in the school!
The rest of the morning passed by quickly. We refreshed our knowledge of school rules by doing a 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire' quiz with Mr. Ramesh. It was so much better than just being talked to! We then had icebreakers with Dr. Umali and Mr. Andrew. A particularly memorable activity was when we used our shoes to spell out various words. Who knew we had enough footwear to spell 'Pelita International School'?
After a short break, we returned to the hall to the cries of, 'Treasure Hunt!' That's right, the teachers had organized an Amazing Race around the school to learn about our subjects. Setting off in groups, we learnt about different apparatus in the Science Lab, before dashing off to the Basketball Court for a little taste of Physical Education, only to return to the Canteen for a dose of Geography. Talk about chasing after knowledge!
The best part, though, was when we went to the ICT Lab for a spot of technology. Mr. Joseph had this really cool activity where we used the Wii to learn archery. We laughed at each other's attempts to fire arrow after arrow, cheering each successful hit and applauding every valiant attempt. No wonder ICT is such a popular subject nowadays!
We ended the day with more serious business: sorting out our co-curricular activities and individual classrooms with our respective Homeroom teachers. That said, it was a refreshing experience to explore new places, learn new subjects and meet new friends in a fun and engaging manner. After all, it's not every school that the teachers dress up and dance to begin the school year!
